On behalf of the local organizing committee, we are delighted to welcome you to the XXIII Biennial Congress of the International Organization for Mycoplasmology (IOM). Unfortunately, we cannot meet in person in Tel Aviv, and this is the first virtual IOM congress. As you aware the XXIII IOM Congress was supposed to take place in July 2020. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic it was postponed to November 2021. Unfortunately, the continuous restrictions and limitations regarding travel, lead the IOM Board and the Local organizing committee (LO) to decide on transforming the XXIII IOM Congress into a virtual conference, and not cancel it. We are confident that this decision will help us to stay connected with the IOM and our colleagues from all over the world.
However, turning a conference that was held live for almost 50 years into an online platform was a great challenge and task. We appreciate the work and assistance of Paragon group who is the team behind this conference facilitating it happening. We have tried to engage many of the mycoplasma communities around the globe with more than 142 participants from 27 countries.
The IOM congress is one of the major scientific events for the mycoplasma community allowing dialogue and interaction among scientists as well as students from the different fields. The scientific committee members chaired by Carole Lartigue and Yonathan Arfi have prepared an excellent program. We are privilege to have with us three distinguished speakers who will deliver the plenary lectures: Prof. Anat A. Herskovits, from Tel Aviv University, Prof. Rotem Sorek, from Weizmann Institute of Science, Prof. Jacob Malone from John Innes Centre and the University of East Anglia. In addition, through the four days of the Conference, you will have an opportunity to be exposed to interesting oral and poster presentations, covering a wide range of subjects in basic, clinical, plant and applied Mycoplasmology.
We welcome contribution from the IOM Board and IOM members regarding input, support, concerns and suggestions. We also thank all the sponsors who helped make this event possible.
We are looking forward to welcoming you to the first IOM virtual congress. We hope that you will enjoy the conference and gain plenty of scientific knowledge out of it. There is no better time to share knowledge from the comfort of our homes!
